🙈The United States🇺🇸 accuses #Pix🇧🇷 of undermining the American market
The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) criticized Brazil’s instant payment system for allegedly unfairly harming the interests of providers such as Mastercard, Visa, and WhatsApp Pay, and proposed imposing a 25% tariff on certain Brazilian goods in response.
▶️ According to the assessment of the USTR’s chief legal adviser in the country, Brazil’s policy favors the country’s “national payments champion” — Pix. The report argues that the Central Bank’s dual role as both regulator and owner/operator of the system creates a conflict of interest due to the lack of adequate procedural safeguards.
▶️ The investigation into the matter was launched last year by the Trump administration in the context of alleged unfair trade practices by Brazil against the United States.
▶️ The Brazilian government and the companies involved may submit their response until July 15, after which the United States may adopt additional corrective measures.
▶️ The U.S. actions represent a challenge to Brazil’s electronic payments market and serve as a demonstrative example intended to discourage other countries from developing mechanisms that could affect American companies.
▶️ Context: according to data from the Central Bank, PIX usage increased by more than 24% during the second half of 2025.
