🛁 Brazil🇧🇷: three people arrested in São Paulo for fraud and money laundering through online betting
The gambling platforms involved in the scheme are FortuneSlots and ThinkTV. According to investigators, they are linked to more than 10 million users, including victims of fraud.
➡️ Background: law enforcement authorities began taking action following complaints filed with Procon-SP, the consumer protection agency of the state of São Paulo.
➡️ How the scheme worked:
🟢 On FortuneSlots, deposits were made through #Pix. In some cases, players received small payouts to encourage further transactions. However, when they attempted to withdraw larger amounts, they encountered obstacles, including demands for additional payments.
🟢 ThinkTV, meanwhile, promised payments for simple tasks, such as watching videos, rating content, and liking web pages. Participation required users to register and make an initial deposit, also through Pix. Users were subsequently asked to transfer additional amounts to unlock their supposed accumulated earnings.
🟢 Funds were sent to bank accounts used to centralize payments, known as “bolsão accounts.” They were then redistributed to intermediary accounts used for transfers between financial institutions and payments to third parties.
➡️ Police operation: the State Department of Criminal Investigations (DEIC) carried out an operation called “Dial 151,” during which three people were arrested. Based on the evidence collected, a court authorized the seizure of assets belonging to 6 individuals and 5 legal entities. Assets worth up to 154 million reais (USD 30,584,400) were frozen.
➡️ Additional measures: the court issued 2 orders concerning breaches of banking secrecy and another 2 concerning violations of telecommunications secrecy.
It is worth noting that this occurred less than a month after the federal government banned this activity and the acceptance of bets nationwide.
