🎉 Colombia🇨🇴: in its first year of operation, the country's instant payment system surpassed Brazil's #Pix in adoption over the same period

Colombia’s Bre-B system already reaches 83% of the population. By comparison, Pix had reached 65% of Brazil’s adult population🇧🇷 after its first year of operation. The analysis combines data from the central banks of both countries with demographic statistics from the United Nations (UN) and the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

📌 The comparison is particularly relevant because Colombia used Pix as a model for developing Bre-B, although it adopted a different approach. Instead of building an entirely new payment infrastructure, the country integrated existing payment systems into a single national network, facilitating interoperability between financial institutions.

📌 Since its launch in October 2025, Bre-B has enabled 32 million people to make payments through the system. It currently has 36 million registered payment keys, according to data published by PaySpace Magazine. It is worth noting that Colombia has the third-largest e-commerce market in Latin America, behind Brazil 🇧🇷 and Mexico🇲🇽.

📌 Between October 2025 and October 2026, the system processed transactions worth nearly USD 80 billion in total.

📌 Bre-B now processes more than 8 million transactions per day, three times the daily volume recorded during its first month of operation.

📌 In the next phase, Bre-B is expected to expand beyond person-to-person transfers and retail payments and begin serving businesses. In addition, the regulator is considering connecting the system to utility bill payments and salary transfers.

📌 Meanwhile, the Banco de la República, Colombia’s central bank, is working on common protocols for fund refunds, dispute resolution, and the handling of technical failures across payment platforms connected to Bre-B.

The system’s evolution and its ability to expand financial inclusion will remain key factors in assessing the initiative’s overall impact.
