🎉 Paraguay🇵🇾: the Central Bank introduced SIP — the country’s new instant payment system
The Central Bank of Paraguay has introduced SIP, a new instant payment system that can be considered an evolution of the Paraguayan Payment System (SIPAP), which has enabled electronic transactions across the country for the past 12 years.
🔣 SIP will operate in real time, 24/7. In addition, the maximum limit for instant transfers will increase from 5,000,000 to 10,000,000 guaraníes (from 818 to 1,636 USD).
🔣 Informational note: beginning in May 2026, the authorities plan to launch an interoperable QR code system for commercial use, allowing payments to be made from any compatible application or through any compatible financial provider without platform restrictions.
🔣 Context: Paraguay has a population of 6,811,297 people and a GDP per capita of approximately 6,229 USD. According to data from the Paraguayan Chamber of Electronic Commerce (CAPACE), 8 out of 10 Paraguayans made at least one online purchase during the last year. Furthermore, in 2025, the e-commerce sector grew by 23% and already represents approximately 4.7% of the country’s GDP.
