🧼 United Kingdom🇬🇧: money laundering-related budget losses amounted to 5.16% of GDP in 2025

The Napier AI / AML Index 2026–2027 study was conducted by Napier AI in collaboration with GlobalData.

⏩ In monetary terms, the losses amount to approximately GBP 154.83 billion. This figure represents a decrease compared with the previous year: in 2024, losses accounted for 5.53% of GDP. The United Kingdom also climbed 10 places in the overall country ranking over the year.

⏩ Compared with 2024, spending on anti-money laundering measures also fell by 7.7%, from GBP 6.37 billion to GBP 5.88 billion. Nevertheless, the United Kingdom ranks sixth among 42 markets in terms of potential savings on AML expenditure through the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), an opportunity that has yet to be fully exploited. Potential savings could reach GBP 3.08 billion.

⏩ The largest category of AML expenditure is compliance. 64% of institutions identified it as their top priority, while 20% highlighted the adoption of new technologies. Recruitment and staff training ranked third, at 12%.

⏩ The study identifies the United Kingdom's main challenges in this area: cross-border account monitoring associated with illegal arms trafficking, money laundering linked to exploitation and human trafficking, and the illegal trade in high-value goods and counterfeit products.

*️⃣ Background: AML is not merely a regulatory obligation but also a key factor in the consolidation of the gambling market. High compliance costs and penalties for non-compliance place considerable pressure on small and medium-sized operators.
