🎉 Brazil🇧🇷: Itaú Unibanco becomes the first bank to obtain official registration as a crypto service provider

The documentation was submitted in accordance with Resolution No. 520, which came into force on February 2, 2026. With this registration, the institution is now authorized to buy and sell 15 crypto assets on behalf of its clients, as well as hold these assets in custody for them.

➡️ Tokens: through its íon investment app, Itaú Unibanco will offer Bitcoin, Ether, Solana, XRP, USDC, Arbitrum, Bitcoin Cash, Chainlink, Avalanche, Litecoin, Optimism, Aave, Uniswap, Polygon, and PAX Gold.

➡️ Regarding XRP: no information has been provided on whether the asset will be used for cross-border transactions. There is also no indication that Itaú Unibanco intends to operate with the XRP Ledger or partner with Ripple to route payments.

➡️ Background: in its report for the third quarter of 2025, Itaú Asset announced the creation of a structure for managing cryptocurrency funds, becoming the first Brazilian bank to take this step.

➡️ Potential competitors: Nubank offers 28 crypto assets. State-owned Banco do Brasil began allowing customers to purchase Bitcoin and Ether directly in January 2026. Meanwhile, Bradesco and Santander have expanded their cryptocurrency-related services since 2025. However:

➡️ …to register as official providers and custody their clients' assets, banks must undergo independent technical certification, for which they have 270 days. Institutions that fail to meet this deadline must discontinue their cryptocurrency services within 30 days. Cryptocurrency exchanges are subject to a different regulatory framework and must apply for full authorization.
