⛔️Finland🇫🇮: the fight against a potential gambling “black market” should begin with payment blocking
By 2027, Finland plans to end the gambling monopoly currently held by state-owned operator Veikkaus and transition to a licensing model. If a legal market emerges, an illegal one will inevitably appear as well, which is why regulators are seeking to prepare preventive measures in advance.
🔣 In April of this year, a survey commissioned by private gambling company Turtlebet and conducted by research firm Bilendi asked respondents to choose among three options: payment blocking, blacklists, or IP blocking. As a result, 32.4% of respondents considered payment blocking the most effective measure, while 24.1% supported blacklists and 10.7% favored IP blocking. The remaining participants answered that they did not know.
🔣 Public support for payment blocking may be linked to an existing precedent from February 2024. At that time, regulators banned Swedish operator Betsson🇸🇪, and the National Police Board (NPB) placed the company on a list that prohibited interaction with banks and payment service providers.
🔣 Overall, payment blocking appears to have strong public backing, although its long-term effectiveness remains uncertain. Online betting and slot users are increasingly relying on payment methods outside the traditional banking system, including cryptocurrency deposits and offshore electronic wallets.
