📢United Kingdom🇬🇧: the government created a special task force to combat illegal gambling and unlicensed operators
This is a joint initiative launched initially for a 12-month period, bringing together representatives from the gambling industry, payment service providers, developers, as well as regulatory bodies, trade associations, and government departments.
➡️ The group was established by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) as an advisory and coordination body. Its activities will primarily focus on practical and non-legislative solutions. The objective remains the reduction of illegal gambling networks and limiting their visibility and accessibility.
➡️ Regulators also emphasized the need to prevent or reduce payments between consumers and illegal operators, since this could significantly restrict the ability of unlicensed companies to attract and retain customers.
➡️ The DCMS further confirmed that the task force will neither replace nor interfere with the operational responsibilities of the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) or law enforcement agencies, instead serving as an additional framework for cooperation between public and private stakeholders.
➡️ Key context: since April 1, 2026, the tax on revenues generated from remote gambling activities — including online slots, virtual betting, and similar products — increased from 21% to 40%. The tax hike has raised concerns within the regulated sector, as it may encourage users to migrate toward unlicensed platforms. Additionally, recently introduced regulatory measures include multi-tier stake limits for online slots, capped at up to €2 for users aged 18 to 24 and up to €5 for older players.
