The operation was carried out by the cybercrime units of the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office and resulted in the dismantling of an illegal betting network.
🔤 The suspects were identified using programs powered by artificial intelligence, including the open-source intelligence analysis system (AVCI).
🔤 With the assistance of this technology, investigators analyzed 600,000 messages from various groups, enabling authorities to identify profiles, addresses, and suspected criminal activities linked to the individuals involved.
🔤 Police blocked access to 5000 websites associated with illegal betting and other gambling activities, as well as 111 websites that promoted gambling platforms and redirected mobile users to them. Additionally, 40 websites suspected of facilitating payment transactions were also targeted.
🔤 Context: in recent years, Turkey has significantly intensified its efforts in high-risk sectors in order to comply with FATF requirements. The country was added to the “grey list” in 2021 and removed from it in 2024 after reporting substantial progress in regulatory compliance.
🔤 According to the 2025 activity report published by Turkey’s Financial Crimes Investigation Board (MASAK), anti-money laundering measures led to the suspension of transactions totaling USD 131 million. These transactions were allegedly linked to accounts used by illegal betting operators.
Conclusion: Turkey continues to strengthen its crackdown on illegal gambling through the use of advanced technological tools and stricter financial oversight, reinforcing its broader strategy to combat money laundering and meet international compliance standards.
