👀 South Africa🇿🇦: SABA proposes national plan to combat illegal gambling
The South African Bookmakers Association (SABA) has unveiled a six-point national strategy to strengthen the fight against illegal gambling, with a particular focus on payment providers and affiliates that facilitate the operations of unlicensed platforms. According to the association, implementation of the initiative has already begun.
"South Africa does not lack laws prohibiting illegal online gambling. The problem is that those laws are not being effectively enforced," the association said.
🔣 Fragmented regulatory framework: South Africa currently has nine different legal frameworks governing gambling. According to licensed operators, this results in inconsistent compliance requirements and licensing conditions, creating opportunities for illegal operators to enter the market.
🔣 SABA is calling for six key measures to be incorporated into the country's legislation:
🥺 Clearly define who should be classified as an illegal operator;
🥺 Expand regulators' powers to block websites;
🥺 Impose restrictions on payment service providers that process transactions for illegal platforms;
🥺 Introduce targeted measures against intermediaries that facilitate illegal gambling activities;
🥺 Strengthen oversight of those who promote illegal gambling, including influencers;
🥺 Establish a centralized enforcement system with coordinated action among the relevant authorities.
🔣 Among the leading supporters of the initiative is Sportingbet, a brand owned by Entain. Last year, one of its co-founders sent an open letter to the country's nine provincial gambling regulators, calling for a more coordinated response to the illegal market.
