💰 Mastercard launches Wallet Pay: an infrastructure layer for digital wallets

The solution is designed to connect wallets to the global payments network.

📌 Who is involved? — Major regional wallets and digital payment providers:

🟠 wallets associated with Alipay+: AlipayHK, Clip, GCash, KakaoPay, TNG eWallet and TrueMoney;

🟠 as well as Axian, CRED, DaviPlata, Mercado Pago, MTN and TenPay Global.

📌 What are the goals? — Interoperability, innovation and financial inclusion for users beyond their local markets. Even the largest national and regional wallets generally have limited acceptance outside their respective markets. A network with security, currency-processing and compliance capabilities is needed to expand their reach. Mastercard provides access to its global network without requiring providers to establish numerous bilateral agreements.

📌 How is it different from Apple Pay and Google Pay? — Those services also function as digital wallets where users can add cards for payments, whereas Wallet Pay is not a wallet itself but a portfolio of solutions designed to connect wallets to Mastercard's global payments network. Mastercard provides the underlying connectivity, enabling wallet providers to support payment credentials, card issuing and broader acceptance. Wallet providers can expand their reach across Mastercard's acceptance network without having to build all of that connectivity themselves.

📌 How does it work? — Wallet Pay combines several capabilities to expand what digital wallets can offer:

🟠 the linked wallet can be converted into a tokenized payment credential for processing transactions through Mastercard;

🟠 Mastercard Pay Local links the customer's card with a local digital wallet;

🟠 Mastercard Digital Enablement Service (MDES) enables card credentials to be tokenized, replacing sensitive card information with tokens;

🟠 fast transfers between cards, wallets and accounts across more than 200 countries and territories and 150 currencies;

🟠 a function that allows wallet operators to issue their own credit, debit or prepaid cards.

📌 Context: in June 2026, Mastercard launched Agent Pay for Machines (AP4M), an open protocol that allows AI agents to interact directly and carry out automated microtransactions in the background. Here too, the platform acts as an infrastructure provider, indicating a move toward more integrated financial solutions.
