💃📱Europe: Mastercard begins supporting self-custodial cryptocurrency wallets
In partnership with the service Mercuryo, Mastercard has launched a cryptocurrency debit card in euros, allowing users to spend their crypto from self-custodial wallets at over 100 million points of sale.
➡️ Context: Mastercard began supporting cryptocurrencies in February 2021, collaborating with entities like USD Coin, Circle, and Coinbase. It has since become clear that many users prefer to avoid centralized exchanges.
➡️ Partners emphasize the importance of bridging the gap between blockchain technology and traditional payment systems.
➡️ The new card, called Spend, includes some fees, such as an issuance fee of 1.6 euros (1.8 USD) and a monthly service fee of 1 euro (1.1 USD). While not free, the fees are quite reasonable.
