👀 Colombia🇨🇴: on July 20 the government will present Congress with a tax reform proposal affecting the gambling sector
On July 20, the Colombian Government will present a tax reform proposal to Congress that could introduce new fiscal measures affecting the gambling sector.
The stated objective of the initiative is to establish a progressive taxation system, in which companies or sectors generating higher revenues would assume a greater tax burden.
🟡 Although specific betting tax rates have not yet been clarified, the statements have reignited previous debates. It should be recalled that President Gustavo Petro’s administration had previously proposed new taxes targeting the gambling sector, although those initiatives were ultimately rejected by Congress. Furthermore, implementation of one of the decrees concerning the application of VAT to gambling activities was suspended by court order.
🟡 In addition to possible new taxes on sector activities, the reform includes changes to personal wealth taxation, reductions in VAT-related benefits, higher taxation on alcoholic beverages and adjustments to tax filing procedures.
🟡 Context: Colombia has a population of 53,399,171 people and GDP per capita of approximately 7,327 USD. The current Government has a left-wing political orientation, while annual inflation, according to May 2026 data, stands at 5.84%. Furthermore, market projections indicate that online betting market volume will reach approximately 2.03 billion USD by 2029.
