๐ Chile๐จ๐ฑ: regulation of online gambling has once again been postponed indefinitely
Lawmakers still have not reached consensus regarding taxation, oversight and responsible gambling measures.
๐ Who is handling the review? โ the Finance Commission of the lower house of Parliament. The commission has requested that the Ministry of Finance prepare a comparative report on regulatory models used in other countries in the region and in Europe. In addition, extraordinary sessions are expected to take place during July in order to hear opinions from international experts and consumer organizations.
๐ Main agenda items:
๐ด Oversight: the Commission must determine whether the current regulator (Superintendencia de Casinos de Juego) has the technical capabilities required to supervise the digital market or whether a new authority should be established.
๐ด Taxation: while the executive branch proposes introducing a 20% tax on gross revenue, some lawmakers support increasing the rate to 25% in order to align it with other regional markets.
๐ด Responsible gambling: authorities highlighted the need to introduce mandatory limits on deposits and playing time for users.
๐ Context: according to industry representatives, the volume of the unregulated online betting market in Chile is estimated at approximately 800 million USD annually.
