⚽️ World Cup tensions: Hong Kong🇭🇰 police arrested 150 people in a crackdown on an illegal betting network

During the first 3 days of the World Cup, authorities conducted a major operation, which uncovered four betting processing centers, three promotion and administration centers, as well as a direct player interaction point. In addition, at least 8 sports betting websites were identified.

➡️ Who was arrested:

📌Among those detained were organized crime leaders, individuals managing intermediary bank accounts, and 33 account holders.

📌Another 86 suspects were online gamblers. Under local legislation, any person placing bets with an illegal bookmaker — even if the operator is located outside Hong Kong — commits an offense.

📌During raids on infrastructure locations, authorities seized approximately 127 600 USD in cash and assets valued at around 510 400 USD.

➡️ The size of individual bets ranged from 1 276 to 38 280 USD, indicating operations focused on high-value clients.

➡️ Turnover: according to investigators, since July of last year the network processed bets exceeding 40.8 million USD.

➡️ Legal framework: in Hong Kong, legal betting is conducted exclusively through the Hong Kong Jockey Club. The detainees face charges related to facilitating and/or organizing illegal betting activities, money laundering, as well as other offenses. They face fines of up to 638 000 USD and prison sentences of up to 7 years.
