🎉 Western Union launches stablecoin on Solana and prepares USD-based card
The transition to blockchain-based settlements will allow the company to accelerate payment processing without interruptions from traditional banking holidays, which are a practical limitation of correspondent banking systems.
🔣 The USDPT token is not intended for retail use. It is positioned as an infrastructure solution aimed at replacing the SWIFT network, which Western Union currently uses for settlements with partner agents.
🔣 The rollout of the stablecoin will begin in May of the current year and will initially be limited to selected countriesand key partner agents.
🔣 Alongside USDPT, Western Union is launching the Digital Asset Network (DAN), a platform that will use USDPT and other digital assets to integrate crypto wallets with existing retail and agent infrastructure. Wallet users will be able to convert digital assets into local currency through Western Union retail locations, with an interface familiar to network agents.
🔣 The first DAN partner is expected to go live in the coming days.
🔣 Another component of the strategy is the USD Stable Card, a consumer-oriented product scheduled for launch in late 2026. The card will enable users to store funds in stablecoins and spend them across multiple geographies, particularly in inflation-sensitive markets.
🔣 Context: Western Union reported adjusted revenue of 983 million USD for Q1 2026, representing a 1% year-over-year decline, but an improvement of 400 basis points compared to Q4 2024. The company’s shares, traded on the New York Stock Exchange under ticker WU, fell 4.6% on April 25, 2025, closing at 8.9 USD.
