The Central Bank's order applies to both banks and digital wallets.
➡️ Users will need to scan their face at the end of the payment procedure via a mobile application installed on their device.
➡️ The biometric software was developed by the local startup VNG, which also creates AI-based games and messaging apps.
Users are not very enthusiastic about the innovation. The state (let's not forget that Vietnam is formally socialist) is digitizing citizen information, creating a national database, and moving more services online—from processing traffic fines to collecting social security funds. It is not possible to refuse to comply with the new banking rules (as in Russia 🇷🇺, for example)... That is, the issue of civil liberties becomes critical.
Experts, in turn, believe that the abundance of biometric information may lead to an increase in cyberattacks. According to Kaspersky, in 2023 the Vietnamese web domain .vn was the 5th most vulnerable in the world to cyberattacks and data theft.
