🫖 Uzbekistan🇺🇿: Google Pay becomes available in another market
The announcement was made during the “C5+1” session, attended by representatives from five Central Asian countries and the United States🇺🇸.
😀 The launch of Google Pay became possible following amendments to Uzbekistan’s personal data protection legislation in March 2026. The requirement to store personal data on servers located within the country was removed. Stricter rules remain in place for biometric and genetic information.
😀 In July 2026, the Central Bank announced that technical work had begun to integrate Google and Apple with the national payment systems Humo and Uzcard. As a result, users will be able to add cards issued by these domestic systems to digital wallets alongside Visa🪙 and Mastercard💸. With the launch of Google Pay, users will be able to make contactless payments at terminals using smartphones or smartwatches.
😀 The launch of Google Pay marks another step in modernizing Uzbekistan’s payment infrastructure. The country is developing a National Payment Switch, which is expected to launch in 2027. The project addresses the fact that some transactions involving international cards are still processed outside the country. In addition, the Central Bank has held discussions about launching Apple Pay and bringing PayPal to the local market.
🔄 Context: updated cybersecurity rules will take effect in November 2026. Web-based P2P transfers will be discontinued, with the functionality moving to mobile applications. Biometric verification will be mandatory for authentication.
