⚡️Uruguay🇺🇾: what’s happening with the gambling market’s users?

Although young people — aged 18 to 29 — are the least inclined toward gambling compared with other age groups, they significantly surpass others in the use of digital channels.

➡️ The findings are based on a recent report by the Citizen Monitoring Center (Usina de Percepción Ciudadana), commissioned by the National Lottery Directorate (DNLQ) under the Ministry of Finance. The study was conducted through WhatsApp bots and telephone interviews, covering a sample of 500 households.

➡️ The DNLQ confirmed that during the last calendar year the volume of legal betting, including the state sports betting platform Supermatch and official lotteries, reached a record 677 million USD.

➡️ Approximately 8 out of 10 Uruguayan adults have participated in some form of gambling at least once in their lifetime.

➡️ Four in ten players reported that they do not know how to distinguish a licensed platform from an unlicensed one. Most of these respondents belong to lower-income socioeconomic groups.

➡️ Among users aged 18 to 29, 32% rely exclusively on online betting as their gambling channel of choice. An additional 17% combine online and land-based gambling activities.

➡️ bet365 and PokerStars lead the list of the most recognizable platforms (mentioned by 15% of respondents), followed by Betsson, 1xBet and Bwin.

➡️ When asked whether Uruguay should officially regulate gambling (which is currently prohibited), 50% of respondents supported opening the market under strict state supervision. Meanwhile, people under 45 years old showed indifference or preferred that the state not intervene in the sector.
