⛔️ United Kingdom🇬🇧: will unlicensed online betting operators be banned from sponsoring sports clubs and events
For the spring of this year, the government announced public consultations on this matter.

➡️ The matter first came to prominence in February 2025, when the crypto casino Stake lost its licence to operate in the United Kingdom. Despite this, it continued to sponsor the Premier League club Everton for an extended period.

➡️ Currently, sponsorship agreements with an unlicensed operator do not constitute a violation, provided that a licensed local intermediary is involved. At present, this arrangement remains in place and there is no immediate need to impose a ban. However, in a democratic system, alternative views on this matter are also taken into consideration.

➡️ Relevant information: in January, the government established the so-called “Illegal Gambling Taskforce”, which will cooperate with major companies —including Google, Mastercard, TikTok and Visa— to curb unlawful gambling activities.

➡️ In parallel, the regulator is also assessing the possibility of permitting cryptoasset payments within the gambling sector. If adopted, this measure would apply exclusively to licensed operators. Its implementation ultimately depends on Parliament’s approval of the proposed cryptoassets amendment to the Financial Services and Markets Act.
