😱 United Kingdom🇬🇧: the regulator is preparing changes to the licensing system for land-based betting shops
The outlook for betting shops is unfavorable, as the prime minister has described the gambling sector as “problematic”, equating it with the sale of electronic cigarettes, which he also considers an activity requiring tighter restrictions.
🤔 In practice, the proposal involves removing the principle “the aim is to permit”, which required local authorities to issue licenses without unnecessary administrative procedures, provided that the company met the requirements. This is one of the central principles of the 2005 “Gambling Act”; if it is removed, significant amendments to the legislation will be required, which will likely affect the gambling sector.
🤔 In addition, the construction of premises where gaming machines operate around the clock will require additional planning permissions.
🤔 One of the industry's main concerns is that the reform could affect not only new licenses but also those already issued.
🤔 It is not yet certain that the amendments will be approved: they must first undergo public consultations, which will last six months, and subsequently be considered by Parliament.
