😱 United Kingdom🇬🇧: government allocates £30 million to create a new unit to combat online crime
The new unit — bringing together specialists from the police, intelligence services, banks, mobile network operators and major technology companies — is expected to begin operations in April. The initiative is supported by companies such as Meta and Google, whose platforms are frequently exploited in fraudulent schemes.
🟣 Context: in the United Kingdom, one in every 14 adults and one in four businesses currently falls victim to fraud, resulting in economic losses exceeding £14 billion per year.
🟣 The online crime centre will be responsible not only for identifying accounts, websites and phone numbers used by organized criminal groups but also for enforcement measures: blocking fraudulent SMS messages, freezing criminals’ accounts, removing fraudulent social media profiles and disrupting operations at their source.
🟣 It is planned to establish nationwide clear standards for interaction with fraud victims, including response times, a basic support protocol and uniform guidelines for compensation and recovery of funds. The intention is to ensure that the consequences of fraud are not borne solely by the payments industry.
🟣 The proposed reforms also include streamlining judicial procedures and strengthening civil enforcement powers. As a result, the justice system will be able to process fraud cases more quickly, while offenders will face stricter financial sanctions.
