🆘United Kingdom🇬🇧: gambling licence fees may increase by up to 30%
The UK Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has announced the launch of a consultation on a potential increase in fees charged to operators.
➡️ In response to questions over the proposal, the regulator cited budgetary constraints, driven by internal reform programmes and the impact of inflation on operating costs.
➡️ The consultation opened on 27 January and will remain open until 30 March. Any changes approved would be implemented via secondary legislation and are expected to come into force from October 2026.
➡️ Key information: current annual operating fees (including licence fees) are calculated based on turnover data. Any increase will be applied on top of the existing fee structure in each specific case.
➡️ Context: online casino operators with annual gross revenue exceeding GBP 1 billion currently pay GBP 793,729 in licence fees, plus GBP 125,000 for each additional GBP 500 million above the GBP 1 billion threshold. The same fee structure applies to remote sports betting and online bingo.
➡️ These discussions coincide with an increase in the excise tax on online casinos, which from April will rise to 40%, up from 21%. For online sports betting, the excise tax is set to increase from 15% to 25%, with implementation scheduled for the following year.
