🤓U.S. Accuses Brazil 🇧🇷 of Unfair Practices in E-Commerce and Digital Payments

The U.S. Trade Representative Office (USTR) believes that Brazil’s instant payment system Pix, developed by the federal government, receives “too many advantages.”

Naturally, this raises the question: why all the fuss? Shouldn’t they be focusing on improving their own systems? But let’s set rhetorical questions aside and take a look at what’s really bothering the Americans.

▶️In the first half of 2025 alone, Pix processed more than 37 billion transactions, a 27.6% increase compared to the same period in 2024.

▶️Less than five years after its launch, the platform now boasts over 175 million users (around 160 million of them individuals) and more than 576 million registered accounts.

👉Worth noting: the system operates almost entirely within Brazil.

▶️Even so, the USTR has launched a formal investigation to determine whether Brazil is favoring Pix over foreign solutions such as Visa, Mastercard, and other U.S.-based fintechs.

▶️Some analysts see this move as a potential diplomatic retaliation, following the suspension of the social media platform X by order of Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court in August 2024.

▶️It’s also no secret that Trump is uneasy about the BRICS bloc’s push for an alternative reserve currency.
