👀 Türkiye🇹🇷: 6,314 bank accounts frozen in investigation into illegal World Cup betting

Before Sunday’s match between Argentina and Spain, authorities instructed 32 banks to freeze accounts that had already been identified as part of an ongoing investigation.

✈️ The operation was coordinated by the Illegal Betting and Sports Crimes Investigation Bureau, a specialized unit established by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office in June. The suspicious accounts were identified through technical analysis, intelligence information, and the AVCI artificial intelligence system.

✈️ During the operation, investigators identified 19 locations, described as "external financial institutions", which allegedly served as payment processing centers for illegal betting websites. According to the investigation, these facilities were used to collect illicit proceeds, manage bank accounts and payment cards, and transfer funds between accounts connected to betting websites.

✈️ Prosecutors launched an investigation into 23 suspects allegedly linked to the network. Police detained 16 individuals, while efforts to locate the remaining suspects are ongoing.

✈️ Context: In Türkiye, only state-authorized betting services and official lotteries are legally permitted. Investigators say illegal betting networks are increasingly using online platforms, payment intermediaries, third-party registered bank accounts, and cryptocurrency transfers to move funds and conceal their activities.
