📌 The most conservative EU countries in terms of payments: Germans🇩🇪 and Austrians🇦🇹 still prefer cash
This conclusion is based on a survey conducted in December 2025 by the research institute YouGov, commissioned by the consulting firm BearingPoint.
🔹 In Germany, where 2026 citizens aged 18 and over participated, 73% of respondents stated that they prefer to pay in cash. One year earlier, with a similar sample size, this figure was 69%.
🔹 In Austria, 71% of respondents (a national sample of 1000 people) also prefer cash; however, a slight downward trend has been observed there.
🔹 Switzerland🇨🇭 ranks third with 61%. It is followed by Ireland🇮🇪 (58%), France🇫🇷 (51%), and the Netherlands🇳🇱 (46%).
🔹 Scandinavian countries rely on cash the least: in Sweden🇸🇪, only 25% prefer it, while nearly 27% of respondents said they do not use cash at all. In Denmark🇩🇰, 32% prefer cash (while 18% report not using it). This sharply contrasts with Germany and Austria, where the share of people who have completely abandoned cash is just 2% and 1%, respectively.
