⚡️Tanzania🇹🇿: the government will introduce a 5% excise tax on all forms of gambling during the 2026-2027 fiscal year

The measure applies to online gambling, land-based casinos and slot machine halls.

💡 The government expects the new tax to increase budget revenues by approximately 74.5 billion Tanzanian shillings (28.4 million USD).

💡 Approximately 10% of revenues generated from the tax will be allocated to Tanzania’s Gaming Commission “to improve the efficiency and regulation of gambling activities.”

💡 Context: Tanzania’s population stands at 65,642,682 people, while GDP per capita is approximately 1,106 USD. According to H2 Gambling Capital, gross gambling revenue reached 463.3 million USD in 2025 and is expected to exceed 1 billion USD by the end of 2031. The online gambling market segment alone is projected to account for 918.9 million USD of that total.

💡 Although the new excise tax could create additional pressure on licensed operators and potentially encourage the growth of unlicensed activity, the illegal market accounted for only 4.5% of total gross gambling revenue in 2025.

💡 Key point: Tanzania has a structured regulatory framework, growing internet penetration and strong cultural interest in sports betting, particularly in relation to football.
