⚡️Sweden🇸🇪: scandal

It was recently calculated that the turnover of illegal operators in 2023 reached SEK 2.5 billion, almost one billion more than licensed companies. Shocked by this figure, the Swedish gambling authority — Spelinspektionen — is set to gain additional powers.

▶️These include the ability to conduct covert test purchases and implement faster measures to block payments.

▶️Context: currently, 60–65% of the Swedish gambling industry’s revenue comes from the Internet. Interestingly, advertising for casinos or sports betting is not prohibited.

▶️This well-known tolerance has been the basis for ambitious political programs, such as keeping 90% of all gambling within the regulated market. However, in the casino segment, only 79% of companies currently report to the state. In sports betting, the regulator controls — or at least believes it controls — 97%.

▶️Notable fact: since its launch in January 2019, more than 100,000 users have registered in Sweden’s Spelpaus self-exclusion registry.
