🌝 Sweden🇸🇪: gambling and betting revenue continues to show steady growth
In the second quarter of 2026, revenue from gambling and betting increased by 5.1% year over year, continuing the sector's steady growth. The Swedish regulator Spelinspektionen continues to monitor the sector's revenue.
😊 Figures
🔺 The total turnover of licensed gambling operators reached EUR 669 million in the second quarter, up 5.1% year over year.
🔺 The online segment accounted for the largest share of revenue, generating nearly EUR 450 million, an increase of 7% year over year.
🔺 State lotteries and gaming machines generated EUR 128.2 million, remaining broadly in line with the 2025 level.
🔺 Gambling activities conducted for public-interest purposes generated EUR 77.9 million.
😊 Self-exclusion: participation in the national Spelpaus register declined by 0.7% compared with the first quarter, to fewer than 138,000 people. After documentary filmmakers exposed a data leak from the register, the regulator tightened access requirements in April by introducing unique identifiers and stricter verification protocols.
😊 Unlicensed operators: according to the regulator, there were 2,186 unlicensed gambling websites at the end of April. Spelinspektionen's main challenges include influencers, affiliate networks and link farms directing users to offshore casinos.
😊 The share of channelized online gambling declined for the third consecutive year by 1% year over year, reaching 84% in 2025.
📌 Context: in April, Swedish players were completely prohibited from paying for slots and betting with credit. The exception was public-interest lotteries and bingo.
