😳Sweden 🇸🇪: final ban on credit-based gambling payments to take effect by April 2026

However, while the measure is final, it will not be absolute, as exceptions will apply to gambling activities that serve public benefit purposes.

▶️These may include certain lotteries engaged in charitable activities unconnected to political parties.

▶️All other licensed operators and gambling agents will be prohibited from processing transactions involving any form of credit starting April next year. The rule will extend to loan agreements and bank overdrafts.

▶️Payment service providers will be required to block credit card payments and refrain from advertising third-party lending services to customers.

▶️Context: as of January 2025, Sweden’s total consumer debt reached a record USD 14.7 billion, prompting stricter regulation.

▶️Additional note: the gambling regulator Spelinspektionen will oversee exceptions in coordination with the financial authority Finansinspektionen and the consumer protection agency Konsumentverket.
