⚠️South Korea 🇰🇷: lawmakers plan to restrict the use of gacha in online games

For those unfamiliar, gacha refers to a system where players spend either in-game or real-world currency to obtain virtual items of varying rarity and value. The Democratic Party of Korea has renewed its push to regulate in-game monetization practices by reintroducing the relevant bill.

▶️The bill primarily aims to ban “complete gacha” systems, in which players must collect a full set of random items to unlock a rare reward.

▶️Developers will be required to disclose refund and exchange policies. Such provisions were not included in existing legislation.

▶️The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism will be granted oversight authority.

▶️The amendment will also oblige gaming companies to clearly outline their consumer protection policies, including the conditions for refunds or exchanges of digital content purchased with in-game currency.
