🪘South Africa🇿🇦: the gambling industry grew by 390% between 2021 and 2025

And it continues to grow. However, not everyone agrees with this trend.

🟢 According to the Solidarity Research Institute (SRI), total betting turnover in South Africa reached approximately USD 90.9 billion in the 2024/25 financial year. GGR for the same period stood at around USD 4.5 billion.

🟢 The main factors driving growth in the online gambling segment are said to be greater accessibility of mobile technologies and the widespread reach of advertising. However, the institute's report provides no quantitative evidence to support this claim.

🟢 On the other hand, the same report raises concerns that gambling is draining household finances, ultimately harming consumer spending and the wider economy. People experiencing financial difficulties take out high-risk loans in the hope of recovering their losses and end up drowning in virtually unpayable debt. Given that the country's official unemployment rate reached 33.6% in the second quarter of 2026, these concerns seem fairly plausible.

🟢 So, what's the solution❓ The remedy has been around for generations: crack down on illegal operators — which account for approximately 62% of online betting turnover — and tighten regulation❗️ And, for good measure, impose advertising restrictions: apparently, that damn advertising is partly to blame for a third of the population being out of work. In 2025, approximately USD 37,000 was allocated from the state budget to the fight against the fight against the fight, but the outcome was more or less predictable.
