😵‍💫 Russia 🇷🇺: According to Sberbank, around 2 million “dummies” are currently active in the country

As promised, here’s the follow-up. Since February, the number of “dummies” in Russia has been growing by 80,000 people each month.

🟣 Losses from phone scams in the first quarter alone have already reached 65–70 billion rubles. If the trend continues, the total could climb to 325 billion rubles by year-end.

🟣 As banks strengthen their anti-fraud systems, scam operations have shifted offline: now, “dummies” often serve as couriers, physically collecting cash, savings, or valuables from victims.

🟣 Global overview: this is a worldwide phenomenon. In 2024, global financial losses from similar schemes hit $1.03 trillion. Meanwhile, 44% of the world’s population falls victim to fraud every week, and 25% don’t report it. The global recovery rate of stolen funds is just 4%.

🟣 In response, Russian banks have begun requiring victims to visit branches with family members to unlock their accounts—even when no prior access had been granted to those family members.
