⛔️ Rusia 🇷🇺: how Abkhazia is fighting illegal mining
Conflicts in the Caucasus. Officially, the main reason is that "grey" mining consumes up to 45 MW of energy, worsening the region's electricity deficit.
▶️ Context: Local restrictions are a result of a federal ban in specific regions introduced in late December. However, mining has been locally prohibited since 2018. While private power plants had been used, allowing the activity to continue for some time, in 2020, authorities banned the importation of mining equipment and have renewed these restrictions every year.
▶️ Current Situation:
☠️ Importing mining equipment into Abkhazia is punishable by 1 to 3 years in prison and the confiscation of the equipment.
☠️ Possessing up to 5 ASIC devices results in a fine of 50,000 rubles. Owning more than five devices incurs a fine of 20,000 rubles per device, with the equipment being confiscated in all cases.
▶️ On December 19, during a parliamentary debate on legal reforms, violence broke out, leading to gunfire: one deputy was killed, and another injured.
▶️ Local Actions: In 2024, authorities confiscated 1,600 mining devices. Additionally, "people's courts" made up of local citizens have actively participated in seizing mining equipment from neighbors and publicly destroying it by burning.
