Portugal🇵🇹 orders Worldcoin to suspend biometric data collection for 90 days
The National Commission for the Protection of Personal Data (CNPD) believes that the Portuguese should protect themselves from the intrusions of Artificial Intelligence... The device, through which the Worldcoin cryptocurrency wallet performs this very thing, is called "Orbs", and the company belongs to Sam Altman, the creator of OpenAi and ChatGPT.
➡️ The CNPD announced that over 300 thousand people in Portugal provided their biometric data... and at the same time, dozens of complaints have reached the Commission, mentioning the unauthorized collection of data from minors, as well as the "inability to erase data or withdraw consent".
➡️ The project was launched in 2019 and gained notoriety for a rather extravagant proposal: the users' faces are scanned using "Orbs" devices in exchange for a digital identity and free cryptocurrencies, through their own token WLD.
➡️ For this project, the company has raised a total of approximately 240 million USD from major investors such as the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz.
➡️ In general, the cryptocurrency wallet is backed by the Worldcoin Foundation, a tax-exempt limited liability foundation registered in the Cayman Islands.
➡️ Over the next 90 days, the Portuguese regulator will investigate the complaints and conduct a comprehensive additional evaluation on the issue of money laundering and the resale of personal data.
➡️ Recently, "Orbs" was also used for iris scanning in Argentina🇦🇷... however, local cybersecurity experts were not thrilled. Spain🇪🇸 banned Worldcoin's activities... and even Kenya🇰🇪 has suspended the project's registration process.
