...So, another serious problem for operators is the draconian scheme that limits the types of sports available for betting.
👎 For example, esports (which is not considered a sport in Germany) is excluded.
👎 Rugby, whose popularity is growing in continental Europe, can be bet on during the Olympics, but not during the European Rugby Championships or local matches.
👎 In football, friendly matches are also usually excluded unless Germany is participating.
➡️ Surprisingly, technical issues also occur. LUGAS (a monitoring system for sports betting operators) has malfunctioned several times during major sporting events, resulting in regulated operators being unable to process bets and losing profits.
Restrictions for players:
➡️ A general deposit limit of 1000 euros per month, which applies to everyone regardless of income, as well as a bet limit on slot machines of 1 euro.
➡️ Strict website and game design rules, which create numerous lags and delays. For example, forced waiting time when players switch between sports bets and casino offerings on the operator's website.
➡️ Players are prohibited from playing more than one game at a time, and when playing online slots, they must observe a 5-10 second delay between spins.
➡️ In 2023, an IP address blocking was introduced for users who try to avoid all this mess and go to unlicensed competitors... in addition to fines and lawsuits. Note: IP blocking is apparently prohibited by German law, but it is very much possible through court decisions.
➡️ However, as of March 2023, around 9.3 million people (13.4% of the German population) interacted with illegal online platforms.
What awaits Germans in 2024 and beyond?! The current Interstate Treaty on Gambling expires in 2027, but we still have to live until then... Representatives of GGL are planning to tighten measures against the black market and, for example, obtain the right to block IP addresses. Currently, the absence of criminal cases against illegal operators is an indication that GGL lacks the necessary tools to combat the black market.
