😱 Nigeria🇳🇬: the state of Lagos introduces a 5% tax on betting winnings

The government of Lagos State has implemented a 5% withholding tax on betting winnings, applicable to all gambling platforms duly licensed within the state’s jurisdiction. The measure effectively reduces net player payouts by five percent.

➡️ The State Lottery and Gaming Authority announced the measure on February 19, and the new rule is already in effect.

➡️ The withholding will be applied automatically at the time of payment and transferred directly to the local Tax Authority.

➡️ Context: Nigeria’s gambling sector faces ongoing uncertainty regarding regulatory changes at both federal and regional levels. Coordination between these frameworks remains limited. In December, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declined to sign a new bill aimed at establishing centralized regulation of the gambling industry.

➡️ Additional context: in December, the CEO of the Africa iGaming Alliance noted that in 2025 tax instabilityremains common across the African continent: “Sudden increases in withholding taxes, shifts toward turnover-based taxation, and the introduction of new levies have created instability for licensed operators”.
