👀New Zealand 🇳🇿moves to regulate online casinos: only 15 licenses will be available
Although the relevant legislation is still under development, the regulator has already received interest from several companies.
➡️ Licenses will be issued through a competitive process, with only 15 available slots. Applicants must meet a set of regulatory requirements and implement harm minimization measures.
➡️ Licensed operators will be able to start offering services from April 2026. Each license will be valid for three years, with the option of a five-year extension.
➡️ Currently, New Zealand residents use offshore platforms, although advertising such services has been banned in the country since 2003. Once the new legislation comes into effect, licensed companies are expected to be allowed to advertise freely within the local market.
➡️ The regulatory bodies involved are the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) and the Gambling Commission, the latter operating as an independent quasi-judicial authority with powers comparable to those of an investigative commission.
➡️Context: New Zealand has a population of 5.2 million and a GDP per capita of USD 48,071 (Tier 1).
Internet penetration exceeds 93%, and mobile phone ownership is over 90%. By 2029, the country’s gaming market is projected to reach USD 3.53 billion.
