👀New Zealand🇳🇿: debate over lifting the ban on online slots and betting advertising

Push notifications, free credits, and similar incentives could become widespread, raising concerns among New Zealand’s lawmakers.

▶️Context: just a few months ago New Zealand implemented a sector reform, which established:

❌Sports and racing bets are legal only via TAB (Totalisator Agency Board New Zealand).

❌A total of 15 licenses were auctioned.

❌Each platform/brand/website requires one license. The limit applies to platforms, not operators.

❌An operator can hold a maximum of three licenses.

❌Licenses are valid for 3 years, with a single extension of up to 5 years allowed.

▶️Many believe that legalizing online casino advertising could reduce revenues from land-based machines, undermining funding for sports and community services.

▶️Critics also fear intrusive advertising campaigns.

▶️The relaxation would apply to the 15 licensed online casinos, but it may also indirectly benefit unlicensed platforms, since determined users know how to bypass geo-blocking.

👍Industry players support the bill. For instance, TAB expressed interest in entering the market through a partnership with UK-based Entain. Global company SGHC went further, calling for the removal of license caps, arguing that people already gamble and it is better to regulate advertising.
The debate is still ongoing.
