⛔️ Moldova🇲🇩: illegal gambling websites linked to Russia🇷🇺 will be the first targets for blocking
Prime Minister Vasile Tofan made the announcement, but refused to name specific platforms “so as not to give them publicity.”
➡️ An important qualification: the prime minister acknowledged in passing that the growth of the illegal gambling sector is linked to higher industry taxes. This refers to the introduction of a 6% tax on player deposits, as well as a 25% levy on the gross revenue of Moldova’s National Lottery or its partner.
➡️ Advertising restrictions: these may also be reviewed. The National Lottery is at a disadvantage compared with foreign platforms. A similar situation is currently unfolding in #Chile🇨🇱, although there, competitors were declared illegal by a court ruling.
🇨🇱 A united front: at a government meeting, officials noted that the fight against the black market is also being conducted in coordination with the National Bank, to block money flows, and with the Information Technology and Cybersecurity Service (STISC), to restrict access to illegal websites.
➡️ Context: last month, more than 7,600 websites associated with illegal gambling were blocked in Moldova.
