⚡️Mexicans🇲🇽 Against the Prohibition of Slot Machines
12 organizations, including Codere and the Association of Permit Holders, Operators, and Suppliers of the Entertainment and Betting Industry in Mexico (AIEJA), have challenged the prohibition six times.
🍀 What happened here? In September of last year, the Ministry of Public Security of Mexico presented the corresponding bill. However, on November 16, President López Obrador, instead of waiting for a vote in the Lower House and then in the Upper House, prohibited the issuance of licenses to new operators through a presidential decree. Since the head of state acted outside the legislative bodies, theoretically the prohibition could be considered a violation of the Constitution. This argument is used in the legal challenges. Furthermore, since 2016, slot machines have been considered "lotteries" because they operate on the principle of "random numbers".
🍀 The prohibition does not apply to those operators (a total of 444) who already had a license. However, when the validity period of (15 years) expires, they will not be able to renew it.
🍀 The legal process is estimated to take approximately one year.
💲 Payment Context. In 2022, 82% of Mexicans preferred to pay in cash... There are reasons to believe that the decreasing trend in this figure is not necessarily due to a transition to bank cards, but rather to the more active use of alternative payment methods.
For online platforms, the prospects are more than favorable. It is unlikely that Mexicans will unanimously choose to stop tossing coins and spinning drums to play bowling and chess, which are allowed by the 1947 law.
