☠️ Indonesia🇮🇩: financial regulator orders action against 38,796 bank accounts linked to online gambling

Indonesia’s Financial Services Authority (OJK) ordered authorities to track and close accounts registered using personal identification numbers (NIK) that have appeared on gambling websites.

👍 In July, the OJK reported that 32,454 accounts had been blocked under the EDD program. It also stated that, as of May, banks had rejected 2.8 million prospective customers and terminated 51,200 existing agreements suspected of being linked to online gambling.

👍 The measures are part of a broader law enforcement effort involving the OJK, Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, and the country’s banking sector.

👍 Meanwhile, Indonesia’s financial intelligence unit has stepped up efforts to monitor fund flows associated with online gambling.

⚪️ The Indonesian Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) recorded USD 5.17 billion in transactions across 467.32 million transactions in the first half of 2026.
⚪️ Deposits totaled USD 1.23 billion across 226.76 million transactions conducted through bank accounts, e-wallets, and QRIS payments.

👍 Separately, the PPATK reported that transactions involving 5,762 accounts belonging to online betting and slot operators had been suspended. Under a court order, the state also confiscated USD 32.83 million linked to gambling.

👍 Enforcement efforts extend beyond financial channels. On October 1, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs reported blocking 4.1 million pieces of content as part of its efforts to restrict access to illegal operators.

👍 Background: Indonesia remains one of the world’s most restrictive jurisdictions for betting and casinos. Its prohibition of gambling reflects both the country’s legal framework and its deeply rooted religious principles. The Criminal Code (Articles 303 and 303 bis) and Law No. 7 of 1974 on Gambling Control prohibit gambling. Nevertheless, the latest figures highlight the continued scale of online gambling activity despite these restrictions.
