🐘 India 🇮🇳: WhatsApp introduces QR code payments in Business App

The new feature, powered by the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), is designed for small businesses and enables QR code transactions for in-app purchases directly on WhatsApp, using the customer’s preferred payment method.

▶️Regional exclusivity: India is currently the only market where WhatsApp can offer this service, since other countries lack a universal payment infrastructure like UPI. Outside India, Meta would need to negotiate separate agreements with banks and digital wallet providers.

▶️Local competition: WhatsApp is a newcomer compared to PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm, which dominate the instant UPI transaction market. PhonePe holds nearly half of the market, while Google Pay accounts for around one-third. WhatsApp’s market share in payments is still small, but its distribution channel is unique.

▶️Strategic advantage: unlike its rivals, WhatsApp does not need to convince users to download a separate app, as they are already active on its messaging platform. Earlier this year, the company secured approval to expand its **P2P payments service** across India.
