🍆 Hong Kong🇭🇰: authorities require banks to implement AI to detect payments related to betting
This was announced by Christopher Hui, Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury.
➡️ The Hong Kong Monetary Authority and the Securities and Futures Commission are working with banks, e-wallet providers, and licensed virtual asset platforms on this initiative. They are required to detect suspicious transaction patterns in real time, issue alerts, and block the accounts involved.
➡️ Mr. Hui also warned that allowing others to use bank accounts or e-wallets temporarily or permanently to conduct transactions related to illegal betting may constitute an offense under anti-money laundering legislation. Players who bet with illegal operators face up to 9 months in prison and a fine of USD 6,300, while operators and their partners face prison terms of up to 7 years and fines ten times higher (USD 637,000).
💬 Context: in June, during the 2026 FIFA World Cup ⚽️, Hong Kong police carried out an operation at that time, dismantling 4 betting processing centers, 3 administrative centers, and one distribution point, as well as taking action against more than 8 illegal websites. 150 people were arrested.
