🎉Google launches the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2)
The Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) is an open standard developed in collaboration with leading payment and technology companies to operate seamlessly across multiple platforms. Built on established industry rules and standards, it enables users, merchants, and payment providers to execute transactions through any type of payment system.
▶️At its core, the protocol relies on mandates — cryptographically signed digital contracts protected against unauthorized access. These serve as verifiable confirmations of user instructions and are backed by verifiable credentials (VCs), forming the foundational proof for each transaction.
▶️The system supports two main modes of interaction:
Real-time purchases
Task delegation to an agent
▶️AP2 can also function as an extension of the Agent2Agent (A2A) and Model Context Protocol (MCP) frameworks, enhancing interoperability within the digital payments ecosystem.
▶️Notable detail: Google currently maintains around 60 partnerships in the payments sector. Collaborating companies include Adyen, American Express, Ant International, Coinbase, Etsy, Forter, Intuit, JCB, Mastercard, Mysten Labs, PayPal, Revolut, Salesforce, ServiceNow, UnionPay International, Worldpay, among others.
