Overview: Cards remain the dominant payment method, largely driven by the continued shift toward cashless payments.
⚫️ From January to June, 77.7 billion cashless transactions were recorded, representing a 7.7% year-on-year increase. The total value of these transactions reached EUR 116 trillion, marking a 2.9% rise compared with the same period last year.
⚫️ Cards continued to be the primary payment instrument, accounting for 57% of total transaction volume. They were followed by credit transfers (22%), direct debits (14%), and electronic money (6%).
⚫️ In aggregate, card payments totaled 44 billion transactions (+9.6%), with a combined value of EUR 1.7 trillionand an average transaction amount of approximately EUR 38. By the end of the period, Europe had 879.3 million cardsin circulation (+12.2%), equivalent to roughly 2.5 cards per capita.
⚫️ At the same time, contactless payments continued to consolidate their position as the industry standard.
➡️ The number of contactless transactions reached 29.6 billion, an increase of 12.8% year over year, while their total value rose by 13.9%, to EUR 0.8 trillion.
➡️ Contactless payments accounted for 83% of face-to-face card transactions and 67% of their total value, firmly establishing them as the dominant payment method at points of sale.
⚫️ The volume of bank transfers grew by a more modest 6.5%. Nevertheless, these transactions — primarily corporate and interbank — involved significantly higher amounts, reaching EUR 107.3 trillion, which corresponds to 92% of the total value of all cashless payments.
⚫️ Meanwhile, the number of ATMs declined by 2.9%, while the number of POS terminals increased sharply by 24%, with 93% of them now supporting contactless payments.
