😴 Brazil🇧🇷: Workers’ Party (PT) proposes new bill to raise betting tax to 24%

Previous bills proposed raising the rate from 12% to 18%, then to 22%, but the current bill proposes increasing it to 24%.

This follows earlier discussions suggesting potential tax hikes.

➡️ According to the bill’s explanatory note, the current effective tax burden on betting stands at around 27%, based on the difference between total bets and total payouts (gross gaming revenue, or GGR), along with other applicable taxes.
The rapporteur explained that this rate “is lower than the standard nominal corporate income tax (IRPJ and CSLL) of 34%, and also below the gambling tax levels applied in France🇫🇷 (55%) and Germany🇩🇪 (48%)”.

➡️ The PT leader in the Lower House proposed directing the additional revenue to fund Brazil’s public healthcare system.

➡️ However, representatives from the National Association of Gaming and Lotteries (ANJL) warned that a 24% rate could fuel the growth of the illegal betting market and undermine tax revenue from licensed operators.
