🐒 Brazil🇧🇷: Workers’ Party introduces bill to ban betting operations
The initiative was recently submitted to Brazil’s lower house of Parliament.
🔺 According to a deputy from the state of Santa Catarina, platforms have ceased to function as entertainment providers and have become mechanisms for extracting income from lower-income groups, placing pressure on retail trade and overloading the Unified Health System (SUS) with cases linked to compulsive substance use.
🔺 The bill seeks to repeal key provisions of Laws No. 13,756/2018 and 14,790/2023, which currently form the legal framework for sports betting and online gaming in Brazil.
🔺 The proposal would ban the operation of platforms, dissemination of information, advertising, sponsorship of sporting events, and the processing of financial transactions related to betting, whether by domestic or foreign companies.
🔺 For enforcement, the bill предусматривает → (fix) introduces coordinated measures: the national telecommunications agency Anatel would be responsible for blocking domains (IP addresses and DNS) and removing applications from digital stores, while the Central Bank would order the immediate suspension of betting-related transactions by financial institutions.
🔺 Penalties for non-compliance include fines ranging from 50,000 to 2 billion reais, as well as prison sentences of 2 to 8 years.
