🔨 Brazil🇧🇷: pressure on illegal betting continues

A targeted but wide-ranging intervention against bank accounts: financial institutions are tracking betting operators as part of the broader crackdown on the illegal market.

🗣 According to data from the Ministry of Finance, during the first quarter of 2026, 323 accounts belonging to individuals and legal entities were closed on suspicion of organizing illegal betting or acting as intermediaries in this activity.

🗣 Violators were identified through behavioral analysis:

🟢multiple transactions through the #Pix instant payment system at short intervals;

🟢mass receipt of payments and payments to individuals, when the company is formally registered as a retailer or service provider.

🗣 Since the beginning of the year, enforcement has increased progressively: 65 accounts were closed in January, 127 in February, and 131 in March. Data for the second quarter has not yet been published.

🗣 Context: identifying smaller-scale operators is part of a broader strategy against the illegal market. In 2024, through a similar analysis of Pix transactions, the Secretariat for Prizes and Betting (SPA) identified 36 fintechs showing indications of suspicious activity. Six months later, the Finance Minister publicly called for stronger oversight of fintechs, although the request was addressed to the Central Bank, which does not have direct authority over them as the SPA does. In addition, over the past 18 months, since the launch of the regulated market, the Ministry of Finance has imposed USD 2,167,000 in fines on online betting operators for various violations.
