Brazil 🇧🇷: #PIX transfers under threat from malware called BRats

Kaspersky
has issued a warning about a new malware strain specifically designed for Android devices — the most common platform for payments and transfers using PIX.

➡️ The name “BRats” is derived from “BR” (Brazil) and “ATS,” which stands for Automated Transfer System.

➡️ The malware spreads through fake apps — such as games or updates — downloaded outside of the Google Play Store. Once installed, it requests permissions that allow remote control over the device.

➡️ BRats monitors when a banking app is launched and, during a transaction, automatically modifies the recipient's information and the transfer amount, diverting the funds to accounts controlled by attackers.

➡️ Even with the phone locked, the malware can perform actions without the user noticing. Since 2023, over 6,300 attacks have been reported, making BRats one of the most active threats in Brazil.

➡️ Although primarily associated with PIX, BRats also targets traditional TED and TEF transfers — especially between accounts at the same bank — making the fraud harder to detect and quicker to execute.
